In no. 6 Møntergade, Copenhagen, in the semi-basement, there is no high ceiling, and the walls rather close in on you, but the “Butik for Borddækning” (Shop for tableware), which was at the address from 1998 until October 2018, had a good reputation and was well known by many with an interest in crafts, design, and artistic activity, and so it formed a good start for the “Udstillingssted for Tekstil” Venue for Textiles.
The place has become a room for the study of textiles, with large and small stories about textiles, what they can do and what they are able to, and it would be welcomed if the venue managed to open people’s eyes to the many facets of textiles: Spectacular and dainty, highly useful and awkward, ironed, easy and comfortable, superficial and three-dimensional, up to the limit technical and very simple, down-to-earth and totally complicated, how durable, worn and very fragile, crisp and lush textiles can be, and in addition the wide range in materials and techniques to a very high degree indeed.
The exhibitions will be set up for the sake of textiles, with as wide a range of disciplines and people working with textiles and covering as many epochs as possible in topics and themes, from the useful to the conceptual, for instance materials by the yard, pictorial weaving, textile printing and embroidery, knitted and woven, lace and gimped/macramé, and so on and so on.
