Thorgej Steen Hansen’s permanent exhibition Viva, Olé a Go-Go at Skjold Contemporary is a site-specific installation which, due to its decorative character, simply fits into the exhibition space’s daily function as a changing room for the football club Boldklubben Skjold’s various football teams at Østerbro Stadium in Copenhagen.
The installation consists of a large coherent mural that unfolds throughout the room. From floor to ceiling and across all four walls as well as the changing room benches. An abstract total painting which has taken its inspirational starting point from a large collection of various football jersey designs from around the world. And taking colors and patterns from that collection the mural strikes a concrete pictorial rhythm in interplay, as well as counter play, to the room’s architectural structure and details.
The work also includes a video that is built up of a long series of short football images and clips that weave bodily, concrete and abstract layers together into a both tight and open statement that within the framework of the field of football discusses unfamiliar topics such as reggae culture and feminism.
