In January 2023, Hans Alf Gallery announced a new collaboration with Danish painter Martin Bigum. In the exhibition Two Worlds, which will be the artist’s first with the gallery, the already versatile artist adds another dimension to his practice, as a new series of formidable, colourful and somewhat atypical Bigum-works take on the main gallery space in Holbergsgade.
Martin Bigum (b. 1966) lives and works in Copenhagen. Bigum has exhibited extensively in Denmark and abroad, and his works are represented in Danish and international collections such as ARKEN, ARoS, SMK/The National Gallery of Denmark, Malmö Konstmuseum, SE, Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, FR, Musee d´Art Moderne de la Haute-Viennes, FR.
Between the years 1996 and 2019, Bigum has had 19 museum solo shows, including a comprehensive retrospective exhibition at ARKEN in 2016, Faaborg Museum and Sophienholm in 2018-19, Bornholm Art Museum, Frederiksborg Castle and Trapholt Museum in 2015-16.
Aside from being a magnificent painter, Martin Bigum is also a gifted communicator – both in terms of conveying his own practice, and art history in general. Between 2009-19, Bigum participated in every single episode of The Art Quiz on DR. Through the years, he has written numerous essays on art for national newspapers such as Weekendavisen, Politiken and Berlingske. In 2015, Gyldendal published the artist’s autobiography ‘My Personal History of Art’, which centered around his artistic and personal inspirations. In 2020-21, DR2 aired the documentary ‘The Art of My Life” featuring Bigum.
